FROM THE AUTHOR

Why Fist Pumps?

Like many physicians, I have given my life to the practice of medicine. I have given my life to helping others. It’s an all-in commitment, perhaps a way of life, like no other. For the most part I have been successful, with my career, my family, my friends and community, my standard of living. For decades, my shoulders were straightened by my success, pride, dedication, and sacrifice.

But more recently, I began struggling, and  I realized I no longer enjoyed practicing medicine like I used to. I became frustrated and short-tempered. I was easily angered, bitter, and resentful. My actions and behavior began affecting important relationships with friends, and even family. I realized then that I was suffering from burnout.

I also notice physicians like myself with their shoulders slumped, their faces prematurely aged by stress and loss of hope. Others appear fearful or too busy and overwhelmed to realize that they are not happy or fulfilled. Early retirements, with a “just get me to the finish line” attitude, and “do I have to do this for thirty more years?” mindset has become a new norm. Yes, burnout is insidious and so destructive.

Since recognizing this issue of burnout in myself and colleagues, I came to realize that my goal—albeit an ambitious one—is to lift up physicians and other healthcare providers who serve. I want to help provide a world that nourishes them and brings them happiness and meaning when caring for patients. A world that enables and encourages them to live out their purpose of using their gifts and talents to help others. A world in which burnout is rare, and better still, is non-existent. Yes, this is a lofty goal, but with millions of like-minded people, we can speak up as one, and benefit all.

As part of my mission I created this website and have written a book as tools to help others who are suffering from burnout or who may be heading in that direction. There is no quick fix, there is no magic bullet. But I’m confident and hopeful that these resources can help and more importantly, get physicians, nurses, and physician extenders started on their successful  journey to be joyful and fulfilled when caring for patients.
